I’m really wanting to make my laptop purchase pretty soon, but I don’t have that kind of money just sitting around. I know that a computer purchase is an approved use for student loans but don’t really understand how I would do that. I do have the ball rolling on my applications and such but don’t know if they will just send me a check or what. Also I am unsure as to when the money would be available to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Excess financial aid money (often called a refund) is given out to students 4 weeks after the semester has started. So IF your aid PER SEMESTER is MORE than your tuition PER SEMESTER, then you will be sent this money 4 weeks after the semester has started. Some folks don’t get enough money to have any excess, in this case, you could not get a laptop.
You should be able to look at your “Award Letter” and your schools website to determine your aid amounts and how much your tuition will be to find of it you have any coming. Some schools will even let you log onto your account so you can get real numbers.
