If I want to help a bill pass, do I first write a letter to my senator, congressmen, represenative, or president obama?
The bill I am wanting to pass is H.R. 988 – Physical Therapist Student Loan Repayment Eligibility Act of 2009
TIA
*i know the government will not listen. I need to know who to write to first for a class assignment. TIA

Contact your congressional representatives. Your confusing “not listening to you” with “not writing and passing a bill that you want. Those are two different things. Too, the legislation that you want to pass is for a very limited number of students. Why should a physical therapist student get a loan waived, and not an electrical engineer? Gosh, that’s socialism.
You should write to three different people-the Congressional representative for your district and the two senators for your state. Explain that you are one of their constituents and that you support HR 988 and your reasons for doing so. Constituent mail is read generally by a staffer who may or may not pass along a specific letter to their representative or senator. Every time I have written to those from my state, I have gotten a cookie cutter response letter. Sometimes they vote the way I want, sometimes they don’t. But if you choose to contact them, you have more voice than any of the thousands in your area who stay silent. Good luck!

You can contact anyone in government. They will not listen to you. The only thing that worries a politician is not getting re-elected. The only chance you have is to get a petition signed by 150 million people. By the way, a federally insured student loan will haunt you forever if you default on it. There isn’t a statute of limitations on money owed to the federal government.
