Most likely if you fax them proof of your new insurance then they won’t have to report you to the state for canceling your auto insurance with them.

Having auto insurance is to protect the rest of the world from an accident that you might create so it is required by (most?) state laws.

However, to be sure, it is simple to ask them why and and get their answer.

Well i know that when you sign up with a new company the new company usually wants to know that you were insured… however i dont recall ever the OLD company needing proof to cancel. That does sound correct to me. Try calling back and saying you sold your home and cars and no longer need insurance on them. Then they cant really complain. They may want to know WHO you switched to, to then try and compete with them and know for marketing reasons. Now it may vary by state, and your particular state may not allow cancel of coverage until new one is established for liability reasons. But… i dont know, sounds strange to me.

Ask your current insurance agent to send this proof of insurance to your former carrier, on your behalf.

This is exactly what we had to do, to avoid a long drawn out closing process with a very undesirable insurer. Our agent sent a letter through the mail and faxed proof of insurance.

I don’t know the laws very well, so I can’t comment if your previous agent or agency is allowed to require this. The best way to avoid trouble is to have your current agent get involved. Any good solid agent interested in keeping your business will be glad to help you close the prior account.

good luck !

it is true, they do it for several reasons, 1 is that you should not be able to make a claim on the policy when you have already taken ot another one, they don’t like you getting road tax on a car which will not have insurance afterwards – i recently had this situation also as my old insurer renewed my existing policy after i told them i had insured my car elsewhere
